Climate
Temperatures in this biome vary greatly between summer and winter. The summers are hot and the winters are cold. With cold winters, it’s surprising how hot the grassland summers can get! Sometimes the temperature is more than 100°F (37.8°C).And in winter the temperature can reach -40°C, Its amazing how cold it gets! Rain in the temperate grasslands usually occurs in the late spring and early summer. The yearly average is about 20 - 35 inches (55 - 95 cm), but much of this falls as snow in the winter. Fire is not foreign in temperate grasslands. They are often set by lightning or human activity.
Strong winds make life difficult on the grasslands, blasting everything in sight. The wind blows harder and longer in the prairies than anywhere else in the united states. It is almost always windy in temperate grasslands because the area is so flat and exposed .There are not enough trees to stop the wind from gathering speed and racing along.Wind has a big impact on the biome. It makes fires hotter and faster-moving, and in winter it sweeps snow into deep drifts. It dries out the land by speeding water evaporation.
